Hindrances to Prayer

I find as a Christian that the best weapon in my arsenal is also the hardest to maintain. Because of the finished work of Christ on the cross we can come to the throne of God with holy boldness. What an amazing privilege to be able to communicate directly with God on our needs and His Will. The more I thought about prayer it began to dawn on me that there might be a way to limit or harm my communication with the Lord.

Selfishness

1 John 5:14-15This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears And if we know that He hears us [in] whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

1.Here we see immediately our prayers must be according to the will of God

2.Any prayer outside of His will would be from a selfish desire

3.A selfish desire is anything that elevates you instead of the Glory of God

A 2. James 4:3 –4 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend [it] on your pleasures.

  1. These pleasures mentioned here are a lust that to God has considered Selfish, Evil, and grievous.
  2. Again, to pray for anything outside of the will of God is considered spiritual Adultery (v 4).
  3. Be aware of selfish prayers they are an abomination to God.

Walking away from the Word

Proverbs 28:9He who turns away his ear from listening to the law, Even his prayer is an abomination.

Abomination – to-ay-baw – A disgusting thing. Beware of turning from the word of God. The scripture is very clear as to how your prayers are seen to God.

  1. These prayers are an abomination because as seen in v4 of the same chapter Those who forsake the law praise the wicked.
  2. The prayers of this person are hated by God : Prov 15:8 – The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD,
  3. Is 1:15 – “So when you spread out your hands [in prayer], I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.
  4. Psalm 109:7 – When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, And let his prayer become

Unforgiving

Mark 11:25-26 – If you have an unforgiving Heart, God will not forgive you wither

Family Issues

1 Peter 3:7 – If I am not considerate, honoring, respect my wife it could hinder my prayers. The word hinders her in Greek means to cut into, or even detain.

Eph 5:25 – Tells us to love our wives the way Christ loves the Church

Col 3:19 – Do not be harsh to your wife and cause her to become bitter

Unconfessed Sin

Ps 66:18 – If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear.

Prov 1:28 – clearly says they will call, and He will not answer, they will seek but he will not be found.

Doubt

James 1:5-7 – If you ask God for something with doubt that he will give He will not hear your prayer.

Mark 11:23 – Jesus teaches us that if we say to the mountain to move and do not doubt it will be moved.

Scripture References:

James 4:3-4 –  You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Even his prayer is an abomination.

Mark 11.23 -24 – “Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.“Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.
