John 14:7 – “If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.” Jesus Christ
ginōskō ( known: in Greek ) ghin-oce’-ko
A prolonged form of a primary verb; to “know” (absolutely), in a great variety of applications and with many implications (as shown at left, with others not thus clearly expressed): – allow, be aware (of), feel, (have) known (-ledge), perceive, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.
Do you know Jesus? Here’s a better question does Jesus know you?
For some reason the Holy Spirit has brought me back to this verse. Jesus says to Thomas if you had known me… now you need to understand this known is a deep intimate knowledge of another person. This known is the same known when the bible speaks of a man knowing his wife. It is real intimacy. It’s the real knowing you get after years of walking through life with someone, after seeing all their ups and downs and experiencing their highs and lows. It’s TRUE friendship. Jesus said, ” had you known me”.
You know I look at how much I know my wife. How I know when she is upset, or happy, I know how she will react to certain things and this is because of the intimate knowledge we share of each other. I know her favorite colors, and foods, likes and dislikes.
My children are the same, I mean just by a certain look on their face I know what they are up to!! It is a great feeling to know them so well! I can tell you these relationships were forged through lots of time spent together, lots of laughs, some tears, many words. These are valued people in my life, and as such I would sacrifice anything to just know them and have them know me.
The Holy Spirit is many things and one of those things is persistent! In my life I have learned when my spirit will not let go of something I need to listen because it is usually the Holy Spirit trying to tell me something. Well what He is telling me now or asking me is how is your intimacy with the Lord? I mean think about it, all the relationships we have and value in our lives we take the time to nourish those relationships. Well guess what, Jesus is no different and today he is asking all of us “do you know me?”.
Here it is plain and simple. If you have known the Lord Jesus than your life would be changed drastically. Imagine being hit by a huge truck I’m sure you can imagine how drastically your life would change. Well Jesus is so much more impacting than that big truck, had you known Jesus you would see drastic changes taking place in your life. You cannot have known the Lord and still be the same it is impossible. 2 Corinthians 5:17- Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, the old things have passed away; behold new things have come.
Now this does not mean that there will not be times in the Christian’s life were sin does not rear its ugly head. 1 John 1:8 – if we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. See we may slip this is a fact in the Christian’s life, but it is not the end of his life. We are new creatures in Christ, so when we slip, we have the opportunity and privilege to repent and turn away from those things. Again, had you known Christ then it is impossible to continually live in a state of sin.
1 John 1:7– But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
As Christians we must walk in the light. What does this mean, really what does it even look like? I find that by looking at the original language at the time of the writing it gives so much more to the text. When we look at the original Greek, we see that this “walk” is a life style. It means to walk all around, to follow. But if we walk in the light is a continual process of walking according to the revelation of Jesus Christ, and the will of God.
peripateō ( Walk: in Greek) per-ee-pat-eh’-o
To tread all around, that is, walk at large (especially as proof of ability); figuratively to live, deport oneself, follow (as a companion or votary): – go, be occupied with, walk (about).
Had you known Jesus (Absolutely) you would have such an intimacy that it would affect your life entirely, and everywhere you walk it would be in the light of His glory.
” If you had known me.” What an amazing privilege that God allows and desires such an intimate relationship with us. Like King David we can say to the Lord ” what is man that you would think about, us”. Do you know the Lord? What has he said to you? Has He not said, ” If you love me you will obey my commands”? If you have known the Lord in your life you would see definite, and purposeful changes due to your obedience and love. Do you know the Lord??
One thing I do not want you to think after reading this is if you are struggling in your walk that means you don’t know Him. Repenting means to turn away from the things you know you should not be doing. If you do not have the Spirit of the Lord you will not feel the need to repent, only the Spirit will cause you to feel convicted.
I urge you to examine yourself, and your life. Are you really in a relationship with Jesus? Do you spend, and value your time with Him? Is He the first person on your Mind when you wake, and the last before you close your eyes? Jesus says, ” Had you known me, you would have believed me”. God wants and intimate relationship with you, He wants to change your life drastically, and our God is able to deliver. Seek Him out, and He will be found by you, talk to Him and He will speak back.
