Sacrifice of Thanksgiving
By: Jamell Adams
Leviticus 22:29 – When you sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted.
I love how the Holy Spirit takes me away to show me different joys in the Word quite often! Before I read the Word, I always pray for the Spirit to lead me to where the Father would have me go, and then I have faith He does. I am in the process of reading through the whole bible again right now I am currently in the book of Leviticus (GREAT READ) and while reading, the Spirit showed me something and I could not get away from it! Oh, by the way, I really love Leviticus it is one of the only books in the bible were GOD speaks 98% of the time. A Sacrifice of Thanksgiving to the Lord must be offered correctly so that I may be accepted. This verse really piqued my Spiritual interest and just like me I ran with it! I must confess I know my wife Loves me, but it must drive her crazy sometimes when she wants to hangout, but the Spirit has given me something to cultivate, and I’m like a dog with a bone! I wanted to see what this meant, I mean I thank God daily, but I wanted a deeper understanding of this verse. Believe me you can think you know something about the word, and then re-read it and the Holy Spirit will give you something totally different. One of the first things I did was research what a Sacrifice of thanksgiving was according to old testament law. I hope you enjoy this study and please if you have questions, or comments let me know!
In Leviticus 7: 11-15 we are going to find the Law of the sacrifice. One of the first things I notice about the sacrifice of thanksgiving is that it was apart of the peace offering. Now the Peace Offering (Heb. Shelem) celebrated peace with GOD that was established based on the efficacy of the atoning blood. It was a feast of joy, and communion. Now we know that everything we read about and see in the old testament should point us to Christ. So, the first thing we need to do is establish how the peace offering does this, so we can see clearly, it’s relationship with the sacrifice of thanksgiving. To the believer Jesus is our peace (Ephesians 2:14), having made peace for us to GOD through His blood (Colossians 1:20). Remember readers Jesus is the reason for everything, and in Him is everything! Praise the Lord.
Next in the text we see what should be offered with the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and cakes of well stirred fine flour mixed with oil. With the sacrifice of the peace offering for thanksgiving he had to also provide cakes of leavened bread. Now this is a lot to unpack, so follow me here! If you take notice from the scripture all of these were to be offered up, nothing was to be left out (Ephesians 5:20). This was showing us that we need to be thankful for the good and the bad that comes into our lives. We know from scripture that unleavened cakes would have been pure, clean, without sin, these were a type of our savior who was offered up without spot or blemish (I Peter 1:19). Also, the leavened cakes spoke of sinful man, as Jesus took on our sins so we could have peace with God. Dear readers give thanks for everything that happens in your life even if you don’t understand Gods purpose today. Romans 8:28 – And we know that GOD causes all things to work together for the good of those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
In Verse 14 we see that one of every offering was lifted to the Lord. This was a heave offering were the priest with outstretched arms would offer it to God as an acceptable offering. Our thanksgiving should be directed straight to heaven straight to God, this is acceptable! When we offer our thanksgiving to God He gives them precedence and receives them immediately. Heb. 13:15-16 – Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of Praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. 16. And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is please. If you have a true desire for your words to reach the throne room of the highest, then SING A SONG OF THANKSGIVING!!! We see in 1 Samuel 2:1-10 Hannah offers up the most amazing song of thanksgiving to the Lord! Thanksgiving is something voluntarily given to GOD I believe therefore He loves it so much. It also shows that the offering shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood on the alter. This shows us our peace, and our thanksgiving is solely based on the blood of Jesus! The reason we must be thankful is because our relationship with God has been restored, we are no longer aliens, and enemies of God. Through the finished work of Jesus, we have been redeemed and can now come boldly to the throne of grace on the foundation of the blood! Because of now have peace with God through Jesus we have a reason to be thankful for everything in our lives, the good and the bad.
Are we beginning to see why the sacrifice of thanksgiving was given as part of the peace offering? It is impossible to be thankful, I mean really thankful until you have peace with the Lord. I know some people will not understand that concept but if you have ever been poor in spirit and now because of the finished word of Jesus your relationship with God has been restored well, your Jumping for joy, and full of thanksgiving!
In Verse 15 we see the flesh of the sacrifice being eaten. Now most offering to the Lord were burnt wholly and never consumed. It seems the peace offering was one of the only ones that the Israelite’s could partake of. This offering went to the priest, as well as the Israelite who brought the offering. Now let’s not forget we see in early text God does get his share of the fat of this offering as well. This is a great picture of the Lord, priest, and the follower and his family celebrating together as they enjoy a meal! Thanksgiving should bring people together it should be a cause for celebration. To have peace with God, and to able to share that with family your community is a blessed thing. Psalms 35:18 “I will give you thanks in the great congregation; I will praise you among a mighty throng.
Finally, we notice the flesh had to be consumed in its entirety on the same day. Nothing could be left over until morning. This is not a votive or free will offering in which more time was given, this was a sacrifice of thanksgiving. This points to the fact we need to be thankful every day, yesterday’s thankfulness will not suffice for today. Has God not blessed you daily? If so you need to lift your voice in thanksgiving, the bible speaks of the (voice of thanksgiving) it is a powerful voice that gives off a sweet-smelling aroma to God. Yesterday is not promised, and tomorrow is gone, so give to God while you have the time. Will you give God His praise today? Will you recognize all the good He has done in your life? Will you a Citizen of the kingdom give unto Him what He has commanded?
Psalm 50:23 – “He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors me; and to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God”.
1 Thessalonians 3:18 – in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 1:12– Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the father.
2 Corinthians 9:15 – Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.
Psalm 52:9 – I will give you thanks forever, because you have done it, and I will wait on your name, for it is good, in the presence of your Godly ones.
