Who do you say I am?
By: Jamell Adams
Matthew 16:13-15 – Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
So, on my last post I went over what it takes to be saved. What a great message to receive! That there is peace to be had with GOD! I feel lead to speak to those who might have taken the opportunity (great opportunity) to join the ranks of the children of GOD!! At the same time, show others a great biblical truth that seems to be contested continually.
Who is Jesus? You have just received him and made Him Lord of your life. You have taken the VERY BEST step you could quite possibly have taken in your life. Whether you received our Lord at a revival, a church service, or a good friend preached the gospel to you, you are now saved! Well I think the next step is for you to really get to know the person you now call Lord. This is a hot topic let me tell ya; there are so many different beliefs out there and most are very misleading. Always remember if you are trying to find truth of a biblical matter than your best source is going to be the inspired word of GOD. He has given us everything we need in His word, and His word is directly from Him. We know that GOD is not a man that He should lie, so we can believe every word He says! Now what I have come to see is that most people are okay with god (Lower case g), but when it comes to Jesus all heck breaks loose. I mean can you imagine to this name all knees will bow, and all tongues will confess, but He is still hated as much today as the day He was crucified. Well for a Christian it is of the utmost importance that we know who our Savior is and always be ready to give a report.
Jesus was not only the Son of GOD, He was GOD Himself. “Oh no such blasphemy” I can hear the people screaming already! Well this message is for those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our GOD and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:1). This message is for those who prayed for a revelation of the knowledge of truth from the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 1:7). As Jesus told Peter to gain this knowledge does not come from ourselves, but from a revelation from the Lord.
The First place we need to go is the gospel according to John.
Here we learn immediately in the text that the Word was in the beginning, the Word was with God, and the Word was GOD. Okay so who is this Word? That is probably the first question we need to ask. Well according to the writer John, the word is Jesus Christ. Let’s look at some of the things John has to say about Jesus.
- The Word was in the beginning – This beginning is to be understood as eternity. If John had said before the beginning, he would of place eternity under the laws of time which would have been a big mistake. Jesus has always existed outside of time in eternity. So, when we look at a passage in the bible such as Genesis 1:1 were it states in the beginning we know based off Johns writing Jesus was already around!! He existed before anything was ever created.
2. The Word was with GOD – Well if we contrast this with John 1:3 were we see all things being created and brought into being, we see the Word was already there! Again, the Word was with God before anything was created.
- The Word was GOD – One thing I want to point out is that when we see GOD in the first parts of the gospel of John it holds the same meaning in the original Greek language. (Theo’s – Creator and owner of all things). If we then move on to verse 14 we see and come to a very truthful conclusion that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us! GOD became flesh and Dwelt amongst us! Here is a part of a sermon written by J. Cynddylan Jones, D.D. that I found very interesting. “Jesus has always existed as the Word. It was not during history that He became the Word. In His pre-existence Jesus Christ is God speaking to Himself; and in His post- existence GOD speaking to us. The same Word speaks to Himself and to us; therefore, it has the same meaning on the divine as on the human side”. Jesus was truly correct in His statement “when you see me you see the Father”.
So, as we start our journey, we start it with biblical proof of Jesus divinity. There is power in knowing who you serve! We serve the GOD who lives outside of time!
Let me take you on a trip, a trip right to the mouth of the Almighty! We see in Hebrews 1:8 as GOD says, “But of the Son He says, “YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.” Right from the mouth of GOD we hear this, and we know GOD is not man that he should lie. As a Kingdom Citizen we take the Word of GOD very literally, meaning we believe every word! 1 Corinthians 2:16 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ.
It is hard for a non-believer to see and understand these teachings in the word, but as believers we have the mind of Chris which gives us clarity.
We must believe the full word of GOD and be ever ready to explain it. Jesus is everything and to our GOD all knees will bow, and all tongues confess that He is Lord and GOD! We see in 2 Timothy 2:15 – Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. My brothers and sisters please handle the word of truth correctly, study to show your selves approved, KNOW WHO YOUR LORD IS.
So, when Jesus asks you “Who do you say I am” what will your response be?
