The Carnal Christian
By: Jamell Adams
So I have been racking my mind over this for awhile now, and I have come to one conclusion, I must write it out. So I am a Christian saved by the grace of God, and only by his grace. I have done so many horrible things in my life; the fact of the matter is honestly I should not be alive today. God has shown me such mercy, such love that I can’t help but serve Him. Now don’t get it twisted I am far from perfect, much like the apostle Paul said in Romans chapter 7 “ for the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil I do not want”. And much like my brother Paul I fall to my knees before a loving God, and confess. See I wrote another post earlier about keeping the faith, and most Christians do strive to fight the good fight, but there are others who are comfortable with Jesus the savior, but do not have much use for Jesus the Lord. Now listen before you think it, let me set the record straight I am not judging… In Christ I love my brothers, and sisters, but if we are being really honest we would all agree the church doesn’t really look like the church anymore. I have come to a conclusion that there 4 different categories or classes of church goers.
1st Class – This would be you average church person. They go every week; have many friends among the members. Unfortunately this person is never converted. They never come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
2nd Class – These are those who are trained to be Christians, but are not. They can speak the language, they know certain verses giving off impression that they are in fact saved. Unfortunately these are the one in charge of all the activities at the local church.
3rd Class – Next we have the real Christian, but he is carnal. This person has never developed into a mature Christian. They are exactly were they were when they except Christ.
4th Class – Thank God, we finally have those who are true Christians, and have grown to maturity spiritually. I hate to say it, but these ones are the minorities at most churches.
Class 3 is really what we need to take a look at today. What is up with the carnal Christian today? OK let’s back up a minute, I want to make sure everyone knows what a carnal Christian is. The best way to explain it is in the original Greek. Carnal in Greek is Sarkikos. This means to be fleshly or to pertain to behavior which is typical of the flesh or human nature. So really this is a Christian who still very much resembles the world.
In 1 Corinthian 3:1 our brother Paul say “And I brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ”.
These carnal Christian are compared to babies in Christ. So I guess let’s compare them to babies. Before we look at some of these comparisons I just want to take a minute to look at some very important verses from the bible. We need to understand it is Gods will that we grow and mature, and not continue to live in open and willful sin
Hebrews-27 – 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth no further sacrifice for sins remains, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and raging fire that will consume all adversaries.…
Carnal Christians we need to open our eyes… We have received knowledge of the truth in Jesus. How can we continue in sin, and not expect there to be consequences?
God has always wanted a people separated unto Him, a people in the world but not of the world. Even if we went back to the Old Testament it was the same thing.
Leviticus 18:3 ‘You shall not do what is done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes.
God has always told us very clearly. Our (the Christian) walk must be distinct and different from those around us. A carnal Christian trusted in Jesus for Salvation, but still craves, and desires the deeds of the flesh. They look like the world. Jesus himself said “I wish you were hot or cold, but because you are lukewarm I will spew you out of my mouth”. I hate to say this people, but WE NEED TO WAKE UP… How much longer will we test the Lords patience?
How can we who have blessed so much in Christ, still continue to live in open sin? Eph 1:3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. When did we forget that at one point in our lives we were dead because of our trespasses and sin, and separated from God? This all happened when we were still walking according to the ways of this world. And in our carnality do we really believe it is OK to go back to be Christ has delivered us from?
Eph 2: 1-3 – 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
We have been justified and have peace with God. Based on this standing, based on the value of the blood of Christ why would we jeopardize such an amazing Salvation? Romans: 1-2 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
My brothers and sisters I urge you to be doers of the word, and not just hearers. Walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk.
James 1:22-25 prove you doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
So as mentioned earlier lets take a look at some characteristic of these babies Christian:
Again remember the carnal Christian is saved by grace, but they are led by there flesh still. So what they lead is a self direct life were
They are in control and Jesus is in the back seat. Paul idea of a carnal or baby Christian is one who is self- centered. One who believes the world revolves around them.
Again characteristic of a baby, is the fact that they are entirely driven by there feelings. Carnal Christians live by there feelings, and as such are not led by the spirit. Even though He lives within them refuse to let Him Rule. Carnal Christians like a good atmosphere in the church; they love the great worship time were the music and songs are just right! Then you know what happens next? The message is delivered, and for some reason it is not as interesting as everything else that just happened.
We are called to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil. We have such a power inside of ourselves if only we would let the Holy Spirit take control. We are called to live transformed lives, the old has passed away, and all things have been made new. Reason with yourselves, examine yourselves, and do not forget the Jesus you learned of when you first believed. Does he not deserve your all, your whole heart, obedience??? Does He not deserve all your love?
